Introduction

Corn gluten is a by-product of the corn industry that has many uses when it comes to lawn care. As a pre-emergent herbicide, It can inhibit the growth of newly forming crab grass by preventing root growth. Unlike most herbicides in general, it is natural and organic. An added benefit of corn gluten is that it also acts as a fertilizer. It contains 10% nitrogen by weight. It is important to note that corn gluten is not a cure for weeds, however it does assist with weed control.

We apply corn gluten in the spring and the fall (for a total of twice a year) when requested, and we pay attention to the timing to ensure maximum effect.

Frequently asked Questions

Is it safe for my grass?

Corn gluten is completely safe for your grass and perennials. However, we do not recommend applying corn gluten to newly seeded grass areas as it can inhibit their growth.

Why isn't it applied in the summer?

We don't apply corn gluten in the summer because weeds (crab grass, etc.) don't typically germinate in the summer. By summertime, it is likely that weeds will have already grown, and corn gluten does not kill weeds.
