What is Dethatching?
Dethatching uses a power-rake (dethatcher) to lift and remove dead grass (thatch) or particles that have accumulated over time on your lawn.
Introduction
Dethatching is a service we provide in the Spring, between April and early May. Dethatching is the process of removing thatch - a layer of dead grass and debris from your lawn. A layer of thatch is normally essential to keeping your lawn healthy, however, after the winter, thatch can over accumulate and prevent your lawn from receiving essential nutrients.
Thatch Accumulation
There are a few more reasons to remove excess thatch:
Excess thatch can accidentally promote insect infestations.
Increases likelihood of lawn diseases
Lawns with too much thatch will tend to be spongier
Dethatching Service
While thatch can be removed with a rake, it is often less effective, and it can be hard work. We use a power rake (made by Classen) on your lawn to remove all the old thatch and other debris from the surface of your lawn, paving the way for a fresh layer of thatch to accumulate throughout the season. We then rake it into piles and bag it for curbside pick up. This service provides a much better quality spring cleaning.
Frequently asked Questions
Will dethatching destroy my grass?
No, quite the opposite. Dethatching is one of the best things you can do to give your lawn a fresh start after the winter season. Our dethatcher has "tines" that help bring up the caked on layer of thatch and expose your soil.
How long does dethatching take?
Depending on the size of the property, dethatching can take anywhere from an hour to four hours.
