What is Top Dressing?
Top dressing involves adding a layer of soil to an area and seeding the area.
Top Dressing:
Top dressing is normally done after the frost is no longer an issue in our climate. Top dressing soil is spread gently on your turf so as to assist with growth but not cover the grass. Covering the grass may result in the grass dying underneath. We then rake the soil in and add grass seed. Our grass is normally a blend of Kentucky blue, Perennial rye grass and a fescue combination. These three are the most commonly used in our region. If buying your own please make sure that you read the labels as some cheap brands are not as good. We also do not use a blend of soil and other products with seed. seed is seed.
Some common challenges is the uneven growth. This may require a top up of grass seed, sometimes more than once. Watering is very important. We like doing these in the Spring because "Mother Nature" helps with the watering. Bottom line is a plant needs watering to grow. New growth depends on temperatures and watering. Cold temperatures results in slower growth, and a combination of watering and temperatures in high teens and low 20s work very nicely.
The most common product in top dressing is soil but sand can also be used. This is why you see green on golf courses with a spread of sand on them at times. We normally keep our lawns much higher than than golf greens.
